3 Tips To Choose The Perfect Flooring And Color

I will never recommend products to my readers that I have not tried, tested and stand behind.

Redoing your floors is a big investment and with so many flooring options out there, how do you know what to choose?!

I went with a new luxury vinyl plank flooring line called ProCore Plus that’s available exclusively at Lowe’s. I chose this line for several reasons and I’ll break down the selection process I used with 3 tips to choose the perfect flooring and color followed by what I chose and why at the end of the post!

Lifestyle

One of the biggest factors to consider in what type of flooring you choose is your lifestyle.

  • How much traffic are those areas going to get?
  • Do you have children and/or pets who might spill, track in mud and dirt, drop things, etc.?
  • Do you want flooring that is low maintenance and easy to clean?

Budget

My least favorite B word! The fact of the matter is, we’re all on a budget. Some are just more than others, so it’s important to consider yours in any home project.

Two things to factor into your flooring selection decisions are:

  1. Do you want something affordable, durable and stylish that will last for years, or are you willing to sacrifice cost and durability for something more expensive that may not last as long?
  2. Do you want something you can DIY to save on installation costs, or are you willing to tack on a few extra thousand dollars to have it installed?

Regardless of budget, flooring is a big project that isn’t easily swapped out like throw pillows or area rugs so longevity is important.

Consider your current décor & get samples!

If you’re not looking to completely redecorate your home or repaint, then it is so important to make sure the color of the flooring you select goes with your existing fixtures and furnishings

You can get samples of just about any product. Some are free, some might cost a few bucks, but either way it’s worth spending a few dollars upfront to potentially save you thousands in the long run.

Samples are not only important to consider with your current décor, but just like selecting paint, the lighting in your house needs to be considered. You may see a display at the store that you fell in love with but when you get it home in your lighting, it might pull certain undertones you didn’t see at the store which can be a deal breaker.

I choose my flooring the same way I choose paint. I get several samples, even ones I might be on the fence about (because you never know!), and then narrow it down to three favorites. From there, I will put those in several different areas of the house – brightest natural lit areas, darkest areas that don’t get much light, and areas where artificial light is the most prominent. Again, this is to see what undertones you get in each area you will have the product since it will look different in different lighting.

When you find one that looks good everywhere – that’s your winner!

What I Chose and Why...

When we bought the house, it had laminate and it has served us well, but I knew I wanted something that didn’t sound and feel as cheap when we replaced it. However, I still wanted something in that same price range per square foot. With luxury vinyl plank flooring being all the rage right now, I entertained it.

I like the fact that it’s affordable but more durable than laminate, it’s waterproof unlike laminate, and you really have to get up close to it to realize it’s not engineered wood.

Another big factor for me was being able to do it myself, so when I discovered ProCore Surfaces ProCore Plus line, I loved that the pad was already attached. That alone made it more affordable than most other hard surfaces once you factor in the cost of the pad that other flooring requires. It also made it much more DIY friendly and less labor intensive. I’m a big fan of all of that!

I also love the convenience factor of it being available at Lowe’s since we have one right down the street. I grabbed a few color samples from the store and ordered more color options online.

Knowing I didn’t want to replace my fixtures, furnishings or décor, I narrowed it down to three that I felt would work with what we have which were English Grove Oak, Jamestown Hickory and Warm Honey Oak. I placed all three in several different rooms for lighting, against cabinets, counters, paint and the existing wood tones in my furnishings.
